When you arrive in a new country, there are certain priorities: Where are you going to live? (don’t worry, we can help with that if you click here) Should I start learning a new language? But there’s another very important question… What do people eat here and more importantly, what desserts do they have?

In Spain, desserts are basically part of the national identity, and the variety is honestly overwhelming. If you’re living in Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia and want to feel like a true local, here are the traditional Spanish desserts you absolutely need to try (and repeat):

  • Crema Catalana

Spain’s answer to crème brûlée. Crunchy caramelised sugar on top, creamy custard underneath – perfect after any meal (and yes, 100% Instagram-worthy).
  • Churros with Chocolate

One of the most famous Spanish desserts. People have them for breakfast, afternoon snack… or after a long night out. Churros + hot chocolate = national treasure.
  • Tarta de Santiago

Traditional from Galicia and made with ground almonds. Not too sweet and decorated with the iconic “Santiago cross” in powdered sugar.
  • Torrijas

The star dessert during Easter. Bread soaked in milk and cinnamon, dipped in egg and fried. Spanish version of French toast but better.
  • Ensaimada

A Mallorcan specialty. Super fluffy sweet pastry dusted with powdered sugar. You can find it plain or filled with cream, chocolate… and even sobrasada (yes, a savoury sausage filling!).
  • Roscón de Reyes

Usually eaten on Three Kings Day (January 6). A soft, round cake topped with candied fruit and filled with whipped cream or truffle. Warning: if you find the charm inside… you pay the cake.
  • Rosquillas

A classic dessert in Spanish village fiestas. Crispy outside, soft inside and with a touch of anise that will instantly give you “Spanish grandma” vibes.

Helper tip: try a different one every week and turn it into your own Spanish dessert challenge.

If we had to choose our favourite… honestly, it would be impossible, they’re all delicious! But we can guarantee that every single one will make you want to keep exploring Spanish food.

Would you dare to try making any of these desserts? Let us know in the comments which one sounds tempting and we’ll record the recipe so we can make it together!
